From Mississippi Export Railroad’s (MSE) incorporation in 1922, the locomotive maintenance crew worked in an old wooden pole-barn, affectionately dubbed ‘the Shack’. Destroyed by Hurricane Frederick in 1979, it was replaced by a new, larger, and modern facility known as ‘the Britt Shop’, that was built to accommodate repairs on locomotives and railcars.
MSE’s Britt Shop provides full service maintenance and repairs for both MSE and customers’ locomotives since its opening in 1981. MSE’s shop began repairing boxcars and hoppers in the early 1990’s and now repairs thousands of cars each year, both onsite at MSE and offsite at customers’ facilities. In 2014, MSE entered into partnership with Aaron Oil Company to provide tank car cleaning and waste disposal services. Today, MSE employs experienced and qualified locomotive and railcar technicians to perform a full range of repairs on locomotives, aluminum railcars, and steel railcars as well as administering preventive maintenance programs.
The Britt Shop holds both the AAR M-1103 B-25 and AAR M-1002 C%/C6 certification. MSE puts safety first; its shop has maintained a perfect safety record for over 10 years and the company as a whole has been the recipient of the Jake Award for each of the past 11 years, 7 of which with Distinction. Additionally, the locomotive and railcar repair team averages over 20 years of service each. In January 2017, MSE started providing tank repairs to its customers, making it a one stop shop for car repair, cleaning, storage, and transloading.
